‘A Series of Unfortunate Appointments’

This work aims to both encapsulate the emotional trauma of constant medical investigations, in a form that can be experienced by a diverse audience. Inspired by the emotive language of zines, Helena developed their work into an audio zine, merging the physical with the digital. As a disabled artist Helena values accessibility above all else; in a climate where technology and innovation are abundant, there really is no reason to continue to make work that can’t be accessed by everyone. Helena’s practice and research is strongly driven towards making the art world an increasingly inclusive and accessible place, therein the transcript for this audio work is available to download on request.

A Series of Unfortunate Appointments is a performance designed to encapsulate the trials and tribulations of health care rigmarole. Simultaneously autobiographical and theatrical, this work is a dramatized account of real conversations I have had with healthcare professionals – a caricature of uncomfortable dialogue. The performance consists of four acts of conversation between a consultant and a patient, each one using a dissimilar framing of context.
